Refer to this article which argues that the Statehood for Hawaii within U.S.A. is a form of colonisation because during the granting of Statehood, the choice given was to be a colony or a state withing U.S.A.
Looking back, Germany was a federal republic enforced by Bismark with the force of iron which led Germany to such greatness but it certainly impoverished Sabah, which is rich in Petroleum, Timber and Oil palm, and yet is still the poorest in Malaysia and appears to be poorer than even Rwanda in Africa, within the forced so called federation of Malaysia.
Today, on Friday, the 7th of September, 2007, muslim Sabahans attending Friday prayers at mosques around Kota Kinabalu were told that Sabah was independent 50 years ago, i.e. in 1957.
It is sad day when this misinformation is spread by a major Islamic institution in Sabah.
In 1957, Sabah was still a British colony.

No wonder it is not recorded as historical fact. Any unilateral declaration is usually considered as not valid.
There are many nations who make those declarations but it resulted in wars and are meaningless.
To be independent, you must have full control of your resources. Apparently, Sabah didn't have such luxury under British Colony.
You may argue that the level of control is the same as now, because Sabah does not have control over most of its resources, in much similar conditions as under British Colonial system, making the unilateral declaration as valid.
If it were the same, the only logical conclusion is that Sabah has never achieved independence from anybody.
Maybe it were true, given verbally by the impatient Sabahan leaders, but it was never recorded in writing. Probably the Sabahan leaders were worried of being arrested by British authorities.
Just as any Sabahan group will not dare to make public any unilateral declaration of independence from Malaya these days. They will be arrested under the ISA.
Hari Kemerdekaan means Independence day.
It is modelled after the Independence day of USA.
Whereas in USA, only the 4th of July is mentioned, the exact year of Independence is mentioned.
For USA states that were not part of the original colonial states, such as Texas and Hawaii, I wonder how they celebrate their independence day. Is it also on the 4th of July?
It is alright to celebrate the Independence day on any day, provided it is clear what it is for.
Certainly claiming something that is not correct is certainly stupid but this is the state of affairs for Sabah at the moment.
The signboard is perfectly alright in West Malaysia but it certainly is historically wrong when placed in Kota Kinabalu. It also reflects the colonised state of mind of Sabahans when very few complained about this or at least suggest some corrections.
Padang Merdeka is the prime field for Kota Kinabalu and Sabah.
Padang Merdeka means Independence Field.
In order to keep maintainance cost down, they had to keep outsiders from using the field without any authorisation.
Despite these barbed wire, my children fly remote control x-wing plane there because we need the sheltered and open space there.
This is in contrast to the olden days, when many people will play at fields all over Sabah when afternoon comes. It is now very expensive in order to pay at fields. They are kept vacant although people cannot afford to use these fields.
Fields such as this Padang Merdeka is not built from expensive astro turf. Just look at the quality of grass there. It is not of the highest quality. In fact the barded wire and maintenance cost of keeping these wires will be more expensive than letting people use these fields whenever there are no functions like the days before, especially when Sabah was Colonised by Britain.
Sabahans will laugh at the suggestion but results speak louder than any argument. The state government is so bad financially that it cannot afford to maintain fields for the public free of charge. They are under the siege mentality.
Our economy is so bad that people cannot afford to pay high rates. The economy is bad not because Sabah does not have any resources. We have land filled with oil palm, sea filled with oil but these resources do not go to the people of Sabah.
These bleeding out of fund is far worse than corruption. Corruption, where the money remains in the state, will generate our economy. At least people will enjoy business as people spend their money inside Sabah. Any outflow of fund will not generate any business opportunity and therefore will increase the number of unemployments.
Our relatives and children have to work outside Sabah while we work at much lower pay. Cost of living will be low but this is not a good indicator of economic well being.
We cannot blame our politicians for being corrupt. Partly because there is little money to go around and too many voters to service at such large areas.
We must blame the federal government for not allocating Sabah, what is due to it, as guaranteed by the Malaysian constitution, and failing to honour the promise for even one Free Trade Zone.
There are many violations of the Malaysian constitution, such as the under allocation of Parliamentary and State seats that do not commensurate with the cost of servicing voters, as guaranteed by the constitution. It is up to the voters to demand these instead of believing in the lies brought out that it is due to the incompetent politicians.
Politicians are hard working people but they must survive in order to be respected.
Among the victims was my step uncle who died at the age of 34 something. That certainly shaped my future.
There was an official inquest but I never read its conclusions. There were representatives from the plane manufacturers, Norman Islander, a short take-off plane.
Based on my current knowledge of aircraft, I'm almost convinced that they were murdered.
Their bodies were unrecognisable when they were buried.
Direct witnesses, heard explosions in the air.
Traffic controllers stopped them from landing at KK airport immediately.
Short take off planes, can glide to earth and land safely or at least does not lead to a total destruction of bodies.
Gliding to earth is easy when you're over the sea as was the case with Tun Fuad's Norman Islander, even when it is over weight.
There are rumours that people tried to stop some ministers from joining Tun Fuad. Harris Salleh listened and survived.
The Malaysian police have the bomb expertise as was shown by the murder of the Mongolian model, and some are willing to kill.
Who actually killed them?
Certainly someone who is greedy in getting Sabah's oil resources.
Tun Fuad will never sign away its oil resources for such a small amount of less than 10% in perpetuity, and getting less than 5% in written agreements, and actually getting less than 1%.
Actually these signing away of rights does not allow Sabah to be robbed of its resources because the constitution guarantees that more than 20% of total Federal revenue must be returned to Sabah but this is never done, let alone be audited.
Jefry Kitingan, on behalf of the Christain natives of Sabah mentioned this is his book, but I already pointed it out many many years before but I doubt Jefry is sincere in fighting for Sabah.
Based on his record and current activities, he is more interested in fighting for his wealth and that of his kind, i.e. the Christian natives.
In many Sabahan web sites, we can read the grumbling of Chinese and Christian Sabahans of being discriminated but I say that all these are nonsense. My brother died as a result of the cruel and inhuman treatment by Jippanus. I'm sure, if there ever were any racial riot, he is the first one that I shall look to kill. And surprisingly, I heard from someone's own mouth that I'm not the only one.
